KSM follows a ten step process for analysis and simulation jobs. Steps 1 through 3 are done as part of the proposal.
1. Define customer needs – write a set of precise problem statements.
2. Conceive model -- conceptually, describe a model which can best address the problem statement. Define the input variables, cases, and output variables. Define the form of the output (e.g. numbers, plots, or animation).
3. Choose a method – choose the best method and tool to implement the model (e.g. pencil and paper analysis, spreadsheet, event based simulation, or time domain simulation).
4. Gather input data – collect input data for the model. If data is not available, then revise the model.
5. Do the math – write the equations and algorithms which represent the model.
6. Program the math – implement the equations and algorithms into a spreadsheet or simulation.
7. Verify the program – execute the spreadsheet or simulation and debug, ensure the program correctly represents the equations.
8. Run the program – execute the cases and collect output data. Put the output data into a form that can be interpreted.
9. Validate the model – sanity check results against known benchmarks. Ensure that the model is an adequate representation of reality to address the problem
statements.
10. Write a report which answers the problem statements – interpret the output data and draw conclusions.
